Career Opportunities

When joining the Barnstable Police Department, you gain all the benefits of being part of the largest department in the area.  The BPD has numerous opportunities for specialty assignments and units.

K-9 – The Barnstable Police K-9 Unit was started in 1976. At this time the unit has three (3) working dogs; Alex & Romko being Patrol dogs and Yvonne being a narcotics detection dog.

Traffic Division/Accident Reconstruction – The traffic Division is responsible for accident reconstruction, directed traffic enforcement in relation to citizen complaints and known areas of concern.

SWAT – The Barnstable Police are members of the Cape Cod Regional Law Enforcement Council SWAT Team. Responding to emergency callouts involving hostage situations, barricaded individuals and other high risk calls for service., in addition to serving pre planned search and arrest warrants.

Detectives – The BPD Detective Division is made up of Detectives specializing in various areas, some of which include; General Crimes, Narcotics, Digital Forensics, FBI/DEA/State Police Drug Task Force/Secret Service Joint Task Force, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence.

Color Guard – Officers involved with the Color Guard are issued dress uniforms and participate in numerous events throughout the year to include parades, funerals, ceremonies, and special events.

Marine Unit – The Marine Unit has a 31’ Safe Boat which is deployed out of Hyannis Harbor as well as a 21’ foot Nauset Highlander used for our town lakes and ponds.

Motorcycle Unit – The department utilizes Harley Davidson Electra Glide Motorcycles. The unit is responsible for routine patrol duties, traffic enforcement, parades, and community events.  Barnstable is also part of the Cape Cod Regional Motorcycle Unit which handles a wide variety of events.

Prosecution – The division is made up of Detectives that handle the day to day case prep for court proceedings.

Community Impact Unit (CIU) – This unit works to address the impact of homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness on the community.

School Resource Officer/Adopt a School Officer – Several Officers are assigned to the schools fulltime, while others visit the other schools on a part-time basis in addition to their patrol duties.

Mountain Bike Unit – Currently over 40 Officers make up the Mountain Bike Unit.  Officers are responsible for patrolling the downtown Hyannis area and areas of concern, in addition to handling the many parades and events throughout the year in town.

ATV Patrol – Officers trained in the operation of the ATV’s are responsible for patrolling Sandy Neck Beach and directed areas of concern where a typical patrol vehicle cannot access.

Other specialty assignments and positions include: Command Post Operator, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Sexual Assault Investigator, Range Instructor, Drone Operator, Hostage Negotiator, Health & Wellness Officers, Council on Aging Officer.

The Barnstable Police Department currently employs 120 sworn officers, with approximately 14 civilian employees and 14 civilian dispatchers. It is the largest police department on Cape Cod. The Department serves the Town of Barnstable which covers 76.3 miles including the villages of Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable. The Department utilizes a strong patrol force along with a variety of specialty units and programs to address the complex demands of this socially and economically diverse community. Barnstable is considered the hub of Cape Cod with the largest healthcare facilities, retail shopping centers, and major transportation operations including a regional airport, two ferry terminals, a bus depot, and train station. The year-round population of 45,000 more than doubles in the summer months as seasonal residents and tourists enjoy the beaches, shops, and restaurants in the mid-Cape area.
