$7,500 sign on bonus/sick time carryover/vacation time credit

  • $2,500 at issuance of conditional offer.
  • $2,500 at completion of field training.
  • $2,500 at completion of field training.
  • Potential for carryover of accrued sick time from transferring agency.
  • Potential for use of years of service from transferring agency towards the accrual of vacation time.

Requirements for Civil Service Lateral Transfer

  • Must be currently employed as a sworn officer at a civil service department.
  • Have a fulltime Certified Academy Certificate (Bridge Academy NOT accepted)
  • U.S. Citizen at time of hire.
  • Have a valid Massachusetts driver license at time of hire.
  • Ability to acquire a Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Be a non-smoker.

*The Barnstable Police Department anticipates the transition out of civil service in 2025.

Application & Testing Process

  • Send resume to a recruiter.
  • Attend an orientation.
  • Attend an Intake Interview.
  • Attend a Physical Fitness Test.
  • Extensive background investigation conducted.
  • Panel Interview.
  • Qualified Candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment.
  • Following a conditional offer of employment, the candidate will be expected to take and pass a medical exam, psychological exam, and a Physical Abilities Test (PAT).

The Barnstable Police Department currently employs 120 sworn officers, with approximately 14 civilian employees and 14 civilian dispatchers. It is the largest police department on Cape Cod. The Department serves the Town of Barnstable which covers 76.3 miles including the villages of Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable. The Department utilizes a strong patrol force along with a variety of specialty units and programs to address the complex demands of this socially and economically diverse community. Barnstable is considered the hub of Cape Cod with the largest healthcare facilities, retail shopping centers, and major transportation operations including a regional airport, two ferry terminals, a bus depot, and train station. The year-round population of 45,000 more than doubles in the summer months as seasonal residents and tourists enjoy the beaches, shops, and restaurants in the mid-Cape area.
