Salary & Benefits

Officers are paid bi-weekly, based on a 40-hour work week.  Pay is determined by a negotiated annual contract between the Town of Barnstable and the collective bargaining representation, of the Massachusetts Coalition of Police Local 395.  Sworn Officers are paid a salary based on their rank and their pay step.

$7,500 Sign on Bonus, Sick Time Carryover, and Vacation Time Credit

$2,500 at issuance of conditional offer.

$2,500 at completion of field training.

$2,500 at completion of probation.

Potential for carryover of accrued sick time from transferring agency.

Potential for use of years of service for transferring agency towards the accrual of vacation time.

  • Lateral candidates will start at a base pay rate equal or higher to their current base pay.

Educational Reimbursement – Officers are encouraged to further their education and are compensated for degrees from accredited Colleges and Universities. The town pays 100% of the Officers tuition for all undergraduate courses and materials and 25% of the Officer’s graduate degree as well as books & materials, per section 6 of the Patrol Officer’s MOA.

Senior Patrol Officer Pay – Any Officer serving as a fulltime Police Officer for twenty (20) years will receive a 5% increase in pay. Master Patrol Officer Pay Any Officer serving as a fulltime Police Officer for Twenty- Five (25) years will receive a 5% increase in pay.  Years of fulltime service from prior agency or agencies count towards years of service for these increases.

Health Insurance – Harvard Pilgrim or Blue Cross Blue Shield at 70/30 split with the town paying 70% of the premium.

Educational Incentive Pay – In addition to the Officer’s base pay, they will be compensated for each approved degree from accredited schools as follows: 10% for Associate’s Degree, 20% for Bachelor’s Degree, 25% for Master’s Degree.

Longevity Pay – Annual stipends after Five (5) years of service.

Mental health assistance (Peer Support) with annual psychological appointment in lieu of shift.

Life Insurance Policy provided by the town at no cost to the Officer.

Paid for unused sick time at the time of retirement up to 180 days. Amount depends on years of service.

Retirement Benefits

Every Officer is eligible for retirement at age 55 with at least 10 years of service.

Every Officer is eligible for retirement at age 50 with at least 20 years of service.

Officers are eligible for full retirement pension of 80% if at least 57 years of age with at least 32 years of service.

The average of your highest sixty (60) consecutive months of annual regular compensation (Base salary) is calculated.

Training & Equipment

The Barnstable Police Department is a leader in training and modern equipment.

The town pays 100% of the initial clothing cost for each new Officer. The following July 1st and every year after, Officer’s will receive $1,200 annually for Uniform/Equipment/Cleaning costs. Officers are entitled to request up to $600.00 annually in a check.

The town will replace equipment and clothing damaged in the line of duty.

Maternity uniforms provided to female Officers as needed.

The Barnstable Police Department currently employs 120 sworn officers, with approximately 14 civilian employees and 14 civilian dispatchers. It is the largest police department on Cape Cod. The Department serves the Town of Barnstable which covers 76.3 miles including the villages of Barnstable, Centerville, Cotuit, Hyannis, Marstons Mills, Osterville, and West Barnstable.
