Requirements for transfer
- Have a fulltime Certified Academy Certificate (Bridge Academy NOT accepted)
- Must be 21 years old by the academy start date.
- U.S. Citizen at time of hire.
- Have a valid Massachusetts driver license at time of hire.
- Have a minimum of 60 college credits in any field of study, or currently serving on active duty with 90 or more days of service or veteran with honorable discharge, or active member of the National Guard or Reserve with two (2) or more years in good standing with commander’s endorsement.
- Above (college/Military) may be waived by the Chief of Police upon a written recommendation by Selection Coordinator if the Chief finds that the hiring of the candidate is in the best interest of the Barnstable Police Department.
- Ability to acquire a Massachusetts License to Carry a Firearm.
- Have no felony convictions.
- Be a non-smoker.
Application & Testing Process
The process moves quite fast for a lateral transfer, with the background investigation taking up most of the time during the process. A lateral could be expected to be hired within just two (2) short months of initial interest.

- Attend an Intake Interview.

- Panel Interview
- Qualified Candidates will receive a conditional offer of employment.
- Following a conditional offer of employment, the candidate will be expected to take and pass a medical exam, psychological exam, and a Physical Abilities Test (PAT).
